Someone has to be first and for jet airliners it was the De Havilland Comet. First flight was made in 1949. The Boeing 367-80 (707 predecessor) flew in 1954 by way of comparison. Sadly, the Comet suffered from a lack of understanding of the fatigue effects of pressurizing a thin skinned fuselage at high altitude. Cracks formed at the corners of window and other cutouts and that lead to several fatal crashes. The comet was modded and went on to serve well with the RAF, RCAF and a number of other airlines, but never really regained the top step of commercial flight.

Did exhaustive research and reporting on this plane's troubles for an engineering ethics class a while back. An incredible story and quite a shame that engineers couldn't find and solve the problem sooner.

Isn't the BAE Nimrod based on the Comet?

Isn't the RAF and CAF designations for Air Forces?

Aye. Well, it's the RCAF (Royal Canadian Air Force) currently.

They need to quit this "Royal" stuff. They have as much ties as the US does. :)

Well, we're still part of Commonwealth and have the Queen as part of our government, so that could be debated.

I suppose what you say is true. Every Canadian I know, (4), says, it has no relevance now.

When I did a web check on "commonwealth countries), there were over a hundred that came up. Next time somebody bitches about the US, I will direct them there. :)

It's remarkable both how far we've come and yet how familiar the shape and technology is in the 60+ years of jet aviation.

Yes . Extensively modified, but they share a common heritage.
